COVID-19: Risk Assessment Statement

We are receiving requests about the correct disinfection procedures for our personal protective equipment, with regards SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

COVID-19 is new to all of us and as such the information is changing regularly, however, there have been some trials and studies conducted to understand the Stability of SARS-CoV-2 in different environmental conditions. A copy of the Test results, published in the Supplementary appendix of the article by Chin A W H, Chu J T S, Perera M R A, et al. [Stability of SARS-CoV-2 in different environmental conditions. Lancet Microbe 2020](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/article/PIIS2666-5247(20)30003-3/fulltext); published online April 2., can be viewed by clicking on the link.

As standard, ISC recommends that our products can be cleaned using a mild detergent and water with a temperature of 40oC.  Following the cleaning procedure which includes detergents, the items should be rinsed in cold water.  The device should then be allowed to dry naturally in a well-ventilated area away from any direct heat source.

The general consensus is that Bleach, Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide based products are the best options to remove the risk of transmission of Covid-19 from high-touch metallic items, without the ability to go through the full clean, wash and dry procedure.  Since Alcohol based products are the easiest to control, it is suggested that a solution of 70% IPA would be a good option for wiping down product surfaces.

There is some evidence that some solutions containing bleach can damage webbing and stitching, so for webbing products ISC recommends following the prescribed cleaning procedure as the best option.

There is evidence that using just hot water  at 56oC for 30 minutes shows no presence of the coronavirus – see test results, published in the Supplementary appendix of the article by Chin A W H, Chu J T S, Perera M R A, et al. [Stability of SARS-CoV-2 in different environmental conditions. Lancet Microbe 2020](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/article/PIIS2666-5247(20)30003-3/fulltext) and the study performed by U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program, “[Effects of Pathogen Decontamination on the Strength of Climbing Rope and Harness Equipment](https://caves.org/WNS/Rope%20and%20harness%20decon%20tests.pdf)” which suggested that it is possible to soak textiles in water up to 55oC with little effect to overall strength.

ISC also advises that you contact the specific rope or harness manufacturer for bespoke inspection and care instructions pertaining to your particular products in use. Included with this notice is information specific to Teufelberger.

COVID-19: Cleaning Hardware

As you'll no doubt be aware, the UK left the European Union as of 31 January, 2020. Currently the UK is in a ‘transition’ period, which is due to end on 31 December, 2020.  We are working to take all necessary steps to ensure that supply of ISC products in to the European Union, remains consistent, as we move in to 2021.   
  
Following the end of the transition period, all CE Certified PPE products sold in to the EU, must bear the mark of a European-based Notified Body.   We are now working to change the markings of our PPE products, to bear the Notified Body number 0598 (SGS Fimko), instead of 0120 (SGS UK Ltd.).  
  
**After the 31 December, all of the  CE Certified PPE products that we supply in  to the EU, MUST bear the mark 0598.  However, any products marked with the UK Notified Body number 0120,  which are already in stock with EU Distributors, will remain valid and can still be sold in the EU market place.**

The CE marking procedure is a 2-part process:

**Part 1:  Technical File**

**The assessment of the product and supporting technical information (sometimes referred to as the Technical File).**  
This is conducted by a notified body and when satisfied of the product compliance an EU Type Certificate is issued- this is known as a Module B certificate (formally Article 10 under the PPE Directive 89/686/EEC).

**Part 2:  Quality System (Module D)**

**The assessment of the manufacturers quality system- this is referred to as Module D (formally Article 11B under PPE Directive 89/686/EEC). The notified body responsible for assessing the quality system is the notified body referenced on the product.**  
Currently ISC are assessed for Module D compliance by SGS UK Ltd. (notified body number 0120). This is why you will see CE0120 marked on all ISC products. However, ISC have recently achieved Module D certification from SGS Fimko Oy, (notified body number 0598).  ISC will now begin to transition from 0120 to 0598 and you will start to see this new notified body number appearing on our products.

  
 Therefore, over the course of the next few months, you will notice that:

*   The notified body number will change from CE 0120 to CE0598, on all of our PPE products
*   The Notified Body number will be updated in User Instruction Manuals
*   Declarations of Conformity will be updated to show the new CE 0598 number- and we will continue to make CE 0120 Declaration of Conformity documents available (as these will be required, in order to accompany 0120-marked stock which is still in the supply chain)

**Our commitment ...**

We have started to transition to the new Notified Body number and are continuing to work to complete these changes across the entire range of ISC PPE products, as soon as possible.  As of 31 December 2020, all products sold in to the European market by ISC, must carry the new notified body marking CE 0598.

**It's IMPORTANT to NOTE:**   
All 0120-marked stock WILL remain valid, for sale in the EU market, in 2021...

This means that although non-EU manufacturers or distributors will not be able to sell any CE 0120-marked products in to the EU after the 31 December, **any 0120-marked products that EU Distributors already have in stock, will remain valid and can still be sold in EU, beyond 31 December 2020.**  
   
We will continue to take all appropriate legislative and customer support actions, in order to ensure that supply of products in to the EU will continue as usual, through 2020 and beyond.

Transfer of Notified Body

As you’ll no doubt be aware, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation has now been upgraded to ‘pandemic’ status.

We’d like to assure our customers that we’re working to do all that we can, in order to keep business running as smoothly as possible, whilst taking all practicable measures in order to protect the health of our team members, customers and suppliers.

Following the latest infection control guidelines from the World Health Organisation, we have put the following measures in place:

**Business Travel Suspended**

We have postponed all business-related regional and international travel, until it is deemed safe and appropriate for travel to be resumed.  During this period, our team members will be available by email, telephone and are happy to arrange video-links for meetings.

**Site Visits Suspended**

Regrettably, we’re not currently able to welcome visitors to our factory headquarters in North Wales.  We will continue to accept deliveries and despatch shipments and we have new procedures in place, to ensure that delivery drivers are able to work with us in taking all practicable measures to protect their own health and that of our team members.

**Exhibitions & Events**

**Self-isolation Measures**

BREXIT Update

January, 2020

As of 23:00 (GMT) on 31 January, 2020 the UK officially ceased to be a member of the European Union.

While the UK has agreed the terms of its EU departure, the European Union (EU) and the UK Government are yet to agree the terms of their future relationship.  These discussions and negotiations will take place during the transition period (or ‘implementation’ period), which begins immediately after Brexit day and is due to end on 31 December, 2020.

During this 11-month period, the UK will continue to follow all EU rules and there will be no change in the trading relationship between the UK and the EU.  The UK Government plans to use the transition period to negotiate a new free trade agreement, so that the UK can remain in the single market and customs union, when the transition period comes to an end in December, 2020.

What this means for ISC’s European Customers

Business as usual!  There will be no changes to the way in which we trade with European customers, within the coming months.

We will be posting updates throughout the year, with news of our preparations for continued European trade in 2021.

Post-BREXIT Update- Transition Period

We're delighted to announce that an agreement to transfer ownership of ISC Ltd. to private investment team Birch Lake Investments Ltd., has been signed.

Randy Snell will become the Chairman and Managing Director, replacing Founder and Chairman Denny Moorhouse, effective immediately.  Randy brings over 35 years of global leadership experience in aerospace and height safety industries and has an outstanding track record of developing passionate and high performing teams focused on delivering to customer and market expectations. 

“ISC is recognized as a leading provider for safety solutions in multiple industrial height safety markets,” said Randy.  “Their reputation as an industry innovator with strong brand loyalty is what drove our interest in ISC.  However, it was the strength and passion of the people of ISC that ultimately convinced us to invest in the company.

”Randy adds that the new leadership will be focusing on improving internal processes to make it easier for customers to do business with the company, as well expanding their product ranges to better serve the global markets they engage in.

The transfer of ownership provides Denny with a move into retirement after more than 50 years of industry-leading innovations in height safety devices.  As a young adult, Denny developed a passion for mountain climbing which led him to become a climbing instructor in the early 1960s.  His enthusiasm for climbing continued to grow and he soon looked for other ways to be involved in the industry.  In 1966, Moorhouse established Clogwyn Climbing Gear Ltd, where he began manufacturing innovative climbing safety gear that eventually led to industrial safety products and what is now ISC.

Birch Lake Investments’ acquisition of ISC fulfills Denny’s desire to see ISC remain an independent company.  “I was looking for an ownership transfer that would keep ISC independent and focused on expanding innovative solutions to height safety needs while continuing to invest in our team in Wales and the passion and commitment that our people demonstrate for providing safety solutions for workers at height,” said Denny.  “I have great confidence in the vision and leadership that Randy Snell will provide to drive ISC growth in all of our global markets.”  

With the new ownership comes a renewed sense of excitement and determination.  Randy has shared a growth strategy that focuses on meeting and exceeding customer needs and revitalising product innovation.  The team's first area of focus will be to improve supply chain execution and dramatically improve our lead-time and delivery performance.  Another key area of concentration will be accelerating the pace of product innovation and growing ISC’s product offerings in the markets we currently serve.  We are confident that by driving new levels of performance in these areas we can enable stronger growth for our customer partners.

The NEW KL321 Offset Oval Karabiner (with Keylock Nose)

The name 'Offset oval' may sound like a contradiction in terms, but the KL321 combines the specification of an Oval with that of a 'D' shape Karabiner.  True Ovals are not capable of achieving high breaking loads, as their symmetrical shape shares the load between the spine and the gate of the Karabiner.  The weakest part of any Karabiner is the gate and so wherever possible, designers will try to bias the load toward the spine of the Karabiner.  This is why 'D' shape Karabiners (typically) give the highest breaking loads- our KH219 Iron Wizard (rated at 70kN MBS / 15736lbf) is a good example of this. KH219 Iron Wizard

However, in many industries such as Rope Access & Rope Rescue, the Oval is a popular shape...hence the introduction of our new hybrid KL321 Offset Oval.

Following the success of the ISC-maufactured Zip Trolleys at the original Zipworld site in Bethesda (Europe's longest Zipline), the brand new Zipworld Titan attraction in Llechwedd will be running the ISC RP076 Zipspeed Tandem Pulleys!

The ISC ZipSpeed Tandems employ the same advanced deep-groove ball bearing technology as the mighty Zipworld Trolley, which has now been running on the on the awesome 1750m zipline at the Bethesda site for over a year.  The ZipWorld and ZipSpeed Tandems are of similar design, the main differences being the bespoke side plates and Buffer on the ZipWorld Trolley.  The ZipWorld Trolley is fitted with Acetal wheels (instead of the more durable Stainless Steel wheels of the ZipSpeed Trolley).  The use of Acetel wheels is made possible only by the use of super-smooth, high performance cables at the Bethedsa site.

The new Zipworld Titan attraction in Llechwedd is the largest zip zone in the world, with nearly 8km of zip lines in total!...but for the ultimate Zip lining day out, visitors will be able to visit both Zipworld sites (Bethesda and Llechwedd) in one day, with only a 40 minute drive (with some amazing scenery) separating the two zip sites.

Congratulations to members of the ISC Demonstration Team, who have successfully completed their IRATA Level 1 at Outreach Rescue Training Centre, North Wales! Dan \[QA Production Engineer\], Adam \[Customer Service\] and Ben \[Product Technician\] (shown left to right) completed their assessments using the ISC D4 Work/Rescue Descender and RED Back-up Device, from the ISC Rope Access range and wearing Checkmate PBH05-XRD Harnesses. The ISC demo team were possibly the first people in the world to pass IRATA Level 1 using the NEW D4 Descender!

We are pleased to announce that the RP029 Shear Reduction Block (SRB) Pulley has now been CE Approved for use as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This is the first and only all-Stainless Steel SRB to have been CE Approved and this means that the buyer/user is guaranteed that the unit meets or exceeds the requirements laid down by the PPE Directive.

Buyers/users should be aware that if an SRB is not CE marked then it may not meet the requirements of the PPE Directive. Any PPE that is not CE marked should not be sold within the EU for this reason.

The RP029 has a rated MBS of 44kN (9891lbf) and is manufactured from SS303 throughout, making it the strongest and most robust device on the market. In addition, each unit is individually serial marked for ease of traceability.

The top bobbin (attachment point) has been designed so that it is compatible with a 10mm long-opening Maillon Rapide (GOZ10) which has an MBS of 50kN (11240lbf). This Maillon is also CE marked as PPE.

NEW D4 Work/Rescue Descender, an evolutionary development in the world of descenders! After hundreds of hours of trials, evaluation and feedback, eventually more than two years later we have officially launched the NEW D4 Work/Rescue Descender.

The D4 has a 240kg (529lb) Working Load Limit which means it is suitable for two-man rescue on ropes of 10.5mm-11.5mm (7/16"). It features a unique and innovative progressive cam action, which offers precise control at slow or fast speeds. The progressive cam works by way of one cam operating inside another cam.

The D4 is a double-stop device with an auto-lock function which is activated whenever the operator lets go of the handle.

The D4 meets the requirements of EN12841, NFPA 1983 and ANSI Z359. For information on EN341 please download the PDF below. The D4 has an operation temperature range of 50oC to -30oC.

Below is a graph from our dynamic test machine showing an internal test according to EN12841:2006, mass of 200kg, attachment lanyard 250mm (including connectors), FF2 (Fall Factor 2 Test). The maximum impact force is 4.3kN (6kN allowed) and a fall arrest distance of 260mm (2000mm allowed). There is a maximum static load of 350kg before the device starts to slip. NEW Salt Spray Tester at the ISC Factory which allows us to test new and existing parts and materials to provide improved quality assurance. Salt spray testing is used to check the susceptibility of various materials and coating to corrosion in a saline atmosphere. The test provides an accelerated method which allows ISC's engineers to assess to relative resistance of materials and coatings to chloride corrosion.

The D2 is a new and innovative Descender, the only micro-descender in the world to offer a 'double-stop' braking mechanism. Our engineers developed a new handle operated cam system specifically so that in a panic situation the Descender would actually stop the descent, rather than just slow it down.

The D2 is available as a device or as part of a Kit. Standard kits are supplied with a 15m (50ft) working length, with either Polyester rope or Technora Rope. The D2 has an operation temperature range of 50oC to -30oC.

ZipWorld has two Zip lines on site in Penrhyn.  The "Little Zipper" is 450m long, but the main attraction for adrenaline hungry thrill- seekers will be the 1750m long "Big Zipper"! Those brave enough to take on the Big Zipper will fly down the quarry at speeds in excess of 75mph/110kph.

To achieve this kind of speed, a special Zipline Trolley was needed, so when we got the call, we got our Engineers straight to work in taking on the challenge!

The ZipWorld Trolleys needed to be big, but not too heavy. They needed to be built with the strength and rigidity to withstand the most extreme of environmental conditions. Each ZipWorld Trolley is fitted with top grade Bearings, capable of running at high speeds and performing consistently within a wide range of environmental temperatures. The Wheels are made from a special material, capable of tens of thousands of zip miles, without causing undue wear to the cable.   The wheels also offer a low decibel out put during the flight.

The first 100 ZipWorld Trolley units were delivered on schedule for flight testing, prior to the media launch and official ZipWorld opening and it is with great excitement that we anticipate the tremendous success of the new ZipWorld attraction!

The Rescue ALF (R-ALF) auto locking pulley, incorporates an integral over-speed brake and can be used for pick-off rescues and load hauling, safe in the knowledge that should the user ever let go of the control rope, the over-speed brake will lock and arrest the fall.

The NEW Load-Hauling ALF (LH-ALF) is fitted with brake pawls on one side only, so hauling speed is unrestricted. The LH-ALF is ideal for use in applications where there is a need to quickly haul a load (such as when unloading equipment from a vessel on to an offshore wind turbine). The LH-ALF will only lock on in the event of a drop/excessive lowering speed.

ISC Progress Capture Pulley incorporate a cam which automatically captures the load whilst lifting/pulling a load or tensioning a line. Progress Capture Pulleys are also available with one-way locking Bearings, which lock during release/lowering, providing additional friction and a far greater degree of control.

The new Zipspeed Trolleys come in two overall sizes; the small version (RP075) fitted with 50mm (2") or the large unit, fitted with 75mm (3") Wheels. There are also wheel options to suit 13mm (1/2"), 16mm (5/8") or 20mm (3/4") wires- and we have introduced a new colour-code system to make it easy to identify each Trolley type.
